One afternoon when I returned home after school, my father took many rolls of Xuan paper (xuanzhi<\/em> \u5ba3\u7d19)[1]<\/a> and was going to draw calligraphy in the study. I stood by the desk and watched him draw piece by piece. Some were couplets (duizi<\/em> \u5c0d\u5b50), some were hanging scrolls (pingfu<\/em> \u5c4f\u5e45); some were horizontal inscriptions (hengpi<\/em> \u6a6b\u62ab). Styles varied from seal script (zhuanshu<\/em> \u7bc6\u66f8), clerical script (lishu<\/em> \u96b8\u66f8) to regular script (kaishu<\/em> \u6977\u66f8). I was obsessed with my father\u2019s straight and horizontal strokes for more than two hours, even though my mother asked me to dinner again and again until my father finished. At dinner, he said: \u201cFeng, you so relished calligraphy you don\u2019t even want to have dinner.\u00a0 I can really see that you are interested.\u201d I asked: \u201cDad, would you please teach me calligraphy? If you do so, when people ask you to do calligraphy, I can write it for you.\u201d They all laughed, and dad answered: \u201cWell, I will teach you to write after school starting from tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u5f9e\u6b64\u6211\u6bcf\u5929\u653e\u5b78\u6b78\u5bb6\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u7236\u89aa\u4e5f\u4e0b\u4e86\u516c\u4e8b\u623f\u56de\u4f86\u6559\u6211\u5beb\u5b57\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Writing Chinese calligraphy well only relies on talent (tianzi <\/em>\u5929\u8cc7) and hard-work (gongli<\/em> \u5de5\u529b), in addition to a large amount of reading. Talent cannot compel while hard-work is based on one\u2019s efforts, especially with a good mentor. If one rely solely on talent without hard-work, then the characters he writes are frivolous with no roots and reversing. On the other hand, if one only work hard but have no talent, the calligraphy will be dull with no spirit (shenyun<\/em> \u795e\u97fb). Both talent and hard-work cannot be neglected.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

\u539f\u4f86\u4e2d\u570b\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u60f3\u5beb\u5f97\u597d\uff0c\u9664\u4e86\u8b80\u66f8\u4e4b\u5916\uff0c\u4fbf\u8981\u9760\u6709\u5929\u8cc7\u8207\u5de5\u529b\u4e86\u3002\u5929\u8cc7\u662f\u4e0d\u80fd\u5920\u5f37\u6c42\uff0c\u5de5\u529b\u662f\u9760\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u52aa\u529b\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u6709\u826f\u597d\u7684\u6307\u5c0e\u8005\u3002\u82e5\u679c\u53ea\u9760\u5929\u8cc7\uff0c\u6c92\u6709\u5de5\u529b\uff0c\u90a3\u4ed6\u6240\u5beb\u7684\u5b57\u8f15\u6d6e\u98c4\u5ffd\uff0c\u7f3a\u4e4f\u6839\u5e95\uff0c\u53cd\u8f49\u8aaa\u4f86\uff0c\u53ea\u6709\u5de5\u529b\uff0c\u800c\u6c92\u6709\u5929\u8cc7\uff0c\u90a3\u4ed6\u6240\u5beb\u7684\u5b57\u62d9\u6eef\u5446\u677f\uff0c\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u9ede\u795e\u97fb\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5929\u8cc7\u548c\u5de5\u529b\uff0c\u90fd\u4e0d\u80fd\u504f\u5ee2\u7684\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Calligraphy should start from seal script and clerical script with hard-work because through seal script one can practice round strokes while through clerical script one can practice straight strokes. Once one has acquired the basic skills of both round and straight strokes, one will be many times more adept in writing any kind of script. Otherwise, if one start with the cursive or semi-cursive script, one will not achieve anything no matter how hard you have been writing for decades.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

\u5beb\u5b57\u662f\u5f9e\u7bc6\u96b8\u5169\u9ad4\u5165\u624b\uff0c\u90fd\u8981\u4e0b\u904e\u4e00\u756a\u82e6\u529f\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5beb\u7bc6\u66f8\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u7df4\u7fd2\u5713\u7b46\uff0c\u5beb\u96b8\u66f8\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u7df4\u7fd2\u65b9\u7b46\uff0c\u628a\u5713\u7b46\u65b9\u7b46\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u5f04\u597d\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31\u7121\u8ad6\u5beb\u90a3\u4e00\u9ad4\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u90fd\u4e8b\u534a\u529f\u500d\u4e86\u3002\u5982\u679c\u5b78\u5b57\uff0c\u4e0d\u5f9e\u7bc6\u96b8\u5165\u624b\uff0c\u800c\u5148\u5beb\u884c\u66f8\u8349\u66f8\u3002\u90a3\u5c31\u4efb\u4f60\u57cb\u982d\u57cb\u8166\u5beb\u5b57\u5e7e\u5341\u5e74\uff0c\u4e5f\u7121\u6240\u6210\u5c31\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Father told me this when I start learning for a few days. As my father is an epigraphy scholar (jinshijia <\/em>\u91d1\u77f3\u5bb6) who has collected many ancient stele rubbings (beitie<\/em> \u7891\u5e16), I had a large number of calligraphy models (fanben <\/em>\u7bc4\u672c) for my childhood study. Moreover, relatives and father\u2019s friends often asked him to write, so he took this opportunity to teach me calligraphy skills, especially the method of holding and wielding the pen. Although I was only eight or nine years old, with my father\u2019s explanation and guide every day, I was able to understand the way of writing calligraphy, and the characters I wrote were a bit decent in less than half a year.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

\u7576\u6211\u8d77\u624b\u7fd2\u5b57\u7684\u5e7e\u5929\uff0c\u7236\u89aa\u5c31\u662f\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u6559\u8a13\u6211\u3002\u7236\u89aa\u662f\u91d1\u77f3\u5bb6\uff0c\u73cd\u85cf\u53e4\u4ee3\u7891\u5e16\u5f88\u591a\uff0c\u6545\u6211\u5e7c\u5e74\u5b78\u66f8\u7684\u6642\u5019\u95dc\u65bc\u7bc4\u672c\u4e00\u5c64\uff0c\u662f\u6c92\u6709\u4ec0\u9ebc\u554f\u984c\u3002\u6cc1\u4e14\u8a31\u591a\u89aa\u53cb\u5e38\u5e38\u8acb\u7236\u89aa\u5beb\u5b57\uff0c\u7236\u89aa\u908a\u5beb\u908a\u8b1b\u7d66\u6211\u807d\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u57f7\u7b46\u7528\u7b46\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u3002\u6211\u5e74\u7d00\u96d6\u7136\u53ea\u6709\u516b\u4e5d\u6b72\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5929\u5929\u807d\u7236\u89aa\u7684\u8b1b\u89e3\u6307\u5c0e\u3002\u5f97\u4e86\u9580\u5f91\uff0c\u5fc3\u9818\u795e\u6703\uff0c\u4e0d\u5230\u534a\u5e74\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6240\u5beb\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u5c45\u7136\u6709\u9ede\u50cf\u6a23\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Any achievement requires a lot of hard work, and of course, studying calligraphy is no exception. You only can see the improvement after imitating stele rubbings for about a dozen years or no less than three years and taking an amount of time every day to only practice one style. There\u2019s no achievement if you write seal script today, semi-cursive script tomorrow, and regular script of the North Wei Dynasty (wei bei<\/em> \u9b4f\u7891) on the next day. Moreover, it is said that \u201cshoot for the moon, even if you miss, you\u2019ll land among the stars (qufahushang, jindehuzhong<\/em> \u53d6\u6cd5\u4e4e\u4e0a\uff0c\u50c5\u5f97\u4e4e\u4e2d).\u201d Even though calligraphy is a niche culture, it still requires a strong mind and a high standard. For example, if you prefer the style of He Zizhen (\u4f55\u5b50\u8c9e 1799-1873), you should practice the works of Yan Zhenqing (\u984f\u771f\u537f 709-785). If you want to write like Zhao Huishu (\u8d99\u649d\u53d4 1829-1884), you should start with statue style from the Six Dynasties (liuchao zaoxiang<\/em> \u516d\u671d\u9020\u50cf). There will be a few improvements without interest if you select the works of He and Zhao as practice models. The best way of writing calligraphy is to view the stele rubbings extensively, no matter ancient or modern, to take the strength of each style and integrate it so that one\u2019s own calligraphy style will form. The way that some people like the calligraphy of Kang Youwei (\u5eb7\u6709\u70ba 1858- 1927) and practice in Kang\u2019s style, and copy Shen Zipei\u2019s (\u6c88\u5b50\u57f9 1850-1922), calligraphy when they see Shen\u2019s works is invalid. Because they have worked hard on calligraphy for decades so they can always form their own calligraphy styles, if you follow them, you are as good as them at best. However, they have already been famous. As a consequence, people do not value your calligraphy. Besides, it is not easy for you to achieve their level in calligraphy. To say the least, if it is true that you have considerable talent and quality, why not create a different style with your unique features instead of being a slave of others?<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

\u60f3\u8457\u67d0\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e8b\u4ef6\u7684\u6210\u5c31\uff0c\u4fbf\u8981\u4e0b\u904e\u4e00\u756a\u82e6\u529f\uff0c\u5b78\u66f8\u81ea\u7136\u4e5f\u4e0d\u80fd\u4f8b\u5916\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\u81e8\u6479\u7891\u5e16\uff0c\u591a\u5247\u5341\u5e7e\u5e74\uff0c\u5c11\u5247\u4e09\u6578\u5e74\uff0c\u5929\u5929\u6709\u76f8\u7576\u6642\u5019\u4f86\u5b78\u7fd2\u4e00\u7a2e\u7891\u5e16\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u5920\u6709\u9032\u5883\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u4eca\u5929\u5b78\u7bc6\u66f8\uff0c\u660e\u5929\u5beb\u96b8\u66f8\uff0c\u5f8c\u5929\u53c8\u6539\u5beb\u9b4f\u7891\uff0c\u904e\u4e86\u5e7e\u5929\uff0c\u53c8\u5beb\u884c\u66f8\uff0c\u898b\u7570\u601d\u9077\uff0c\u9019\u6a23\u5b50\u7d55\u5c0d\u6c92\u6709\u6210\u529f\u7684\u53ef\u80fd\u3002\u800c\u4e14\u5b78\u66f8\u96d6\u5c0f\u9053\uff0c\u4f46\u7acb\u5fd7\u4e0d\u53ef\u4e0d\u5805\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u4e5f\u4e0d\u53ef\u4e0d\u9ad8\uff0c\u9808\u77e5\u53d6\u6cd5\u4e4e\u4e0a\uff0c\u50c5\u5f97\u4e4e\u4e2d\u3002\u6bd4\u5982\u8981\u5b78\u4f55\u5b50\u8c9e\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u8981\u5f9e\u984f\u771f\u537f\u5165\u624b\uff0c\u60f3\u5b78\u8d99\u649d\u53d4\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u8981\u5f9e\u516d\u671d\u9020\u50cf\u5165\u624b\u3002\u82e5\u679c\u4f60\u62ff\u4f55\u5b50\u8c9e\u8d99\u649d\u53d4\u7684\u5b57\u505a\u7bc4\u672c\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31\u8da3\u5473\u904e\u4f4e\uff0c\u592a\u4e0d\u9577\u9032\u4e86\u3002\u5176\u5be6\u5b78\u66f8\u5c0d\u65bc\u53e4\u4eca\u7891\u5e16\uff0c\u61c9\u8a72\u535a\u89bd\uff0c\u4f7f\u4e4b\u878d\u6703\u8cab\u901a\uff0c\u53d6\u5404\u5bb6\u4e4b\u9577\uff0c\u800c\u81ea\u6210\u4e00\u9ad4\uff0c\u90a3\u662f\u6700\u4e0a\u7684\u3002\u6709\u4e9b\u4eba\u898b\u4e86\u5eb7\u6709\u70ba\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u4fbf\u5b78\u5eb7\u5b57\uff0c\u898b\u4e86\u6c88\u5b50\u57f9\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u4fbf\u5b78\u6c88\u5b57\uff0c\u90a3\u662f\u4e0d\u5fc5\u7684\u3002\u56e0\u70ba\u4ed6\u5011\u5c0d\u65bc\u66f8\u6cd5\u90fd\u4e0d\u904e\u5e7e\u5341\u5e74\u82e6\u5de5\uff0c\u7e3d\u80fd\u5920\u81ea\u6210\u4e00\u5bb6\uff0c\u4f60\u5982\u679c\u5b78\u4ed6\uff0c\u5145\u5176\u91cf\u4e5f\u4e0d\u904e\u5982\u5eb7\u6c88\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u5df2\u7d93\u6210\u529f\uff0c\u4f60\u7684\u5b57\u4fbf\u4e0d\u70ba\u4eba\u6240\u91cd\u8996\u3002\u6cc1\u4e14\u4f60\u7684\u4e0d\u5bb9\u6613\u5beb\u5230\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u5883\u5730\uff0c\u5c31\u9000\u4e00\u6b65\u8aaa\uff0c\u8981\u662f\u4f60\u6709\u76f8\u7576\u7684\u5929\u8cc7\u548c\u5de5\u529b\uff0c\u4f55\u4e0d\u53e6\u8f9f\u9014\u5f91\uff0c\u81ea\u6a39\u4e00\u5e5f\uff0c\u53c8\u4f55\u5fc5\u53bb\u505a\u4ed6\u4eba\u7684\u5974\u96b8\u5462\uff1f<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

These are my learning experiences and understanding of writing calligraphy.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\u9019\u662f\u6211\u5b78\u7fd2\u7684\u7d93\u904e\u548c\u5c0d\u65bc\u5beb\u5b57\u7684\u898b\u89e3\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

\r\n

I wrote calligraphy for more than one hour every day, copying those famous seal script stele rubbings dozens of times. My calligraphy works in the following five years were reviewed and praised by many senior artists. But I remain too young to be complacent, so I still practice hard every day. Once, the principal of a charity for raising funds for the floods heard that I write calligraphy quite well and invited me through my father to write calligraphy at the venue. At that time, the screen couplets (pinglian <\/em>\u5c4f\u806f) I wrote had sold for more than HK$ 600. This was my first time writing calligraphy publicly, and it was also the starting point for me to serve the community during which time I was only 13 years old.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

\u6bcf\u5929\u5beb\u4e00\u500b\u591a\u9418\u982d\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u6709\u540d\u7684\u5b78\u7bc6\u7891\u672c\uff0c\u90fd\u5beb\u904e\u6578\u5341\u901a\uff0c\u7d93\u904e\u4e86\u4e94\u5e74\u7684\u8fb0\u5149\uff0c\u6240\u5beb\u7684\u5b57\uff0c\u8a31\u591a\u8001\u524d\u8f29\u8a55\u95b1\uff0c\u90fd\u627f\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u734e\u8a31\u3002\u6211\u5e74\u7d00\u9084\u8f15\uff0c\u4e0d\u6562\u81ea\u6eff\uff0c\u9084\u662f\u5929\u5929\u7528\u529f\uff0c\u6070\u503c\u6709\u4e00\u6b21\u7c4c\u632f\u6c34\u707d\u7684\u8ce3\u7269\u6703\u958b\u6703\uff0c\u6703\u4e2d\u4e3b\u4e8b\u7684\u805e\u5f97\u6211\u61c2\u5f97\u5beb\u5b57\uff0c\u5c31\u548c\u7236\u89aa\u5546\u91cf\uff0c\u8acb\u6211\u5230\u6703\u5834\u88e1\u5373\u5e2d\u63ee\u6beb\uff0c\u5beb\u4e9b\u5c4f\u806f\uff0c\u8ce3\u4e86\u6e2f\u5e63\u516d\u767e\u591a\u5143\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u6211\u982d\u4e00\u6b21\u516c\u958b\u5beb\u5b57\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u6211\u670d\u52d9\u793e\u6703\u7684\u8d77\u9ede\uff0c\u90a3\u6642\u6211\u53ea\u6709\u5341\u4e09\u6b72\u54e9\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

My father tried to develop my artistic achievements when he observed my interest in art. In addition to teaching me to write, he also taught me to draw and invited some famous painters of Chinese and Western-style paintings to guide me. As a result, I started to paint every day as well as writing calligraphy. Fortunately, painting and calligraphy are homologous and easy for me to learn. In addition to writing and drawing, I also learned to write poems and essays. I found it very interesting when I immersed myself in literature and art day by day. With the encouragement of relatives and friends, I established a school of calligraphy and painting school for women when I was sixteen years old. The school with open enrolment taught calligraphy, painting, and embroidery. The advertisement attracted dozens of people after being posted for two days. The students were taught in separate classes, and in less than half a year, all students had considerable improvement. Therefore, I believe women are relatively close to art. Some of them who are rich in artistic genius find it easier to be successful, but even women whose talents are not as strong find it easy to get started because of their similar temperament with art. After half a year of trial operation, the school continued for more than four years. Although I dare not say I achieved fantastic success, I saw that some students later worked as teachers in the school, or went on to study for further education, or just continued to study hard by themselves, and many of them even became masters. Personally, I have always been an art addict for two decades, engaged in art movements such as the organization of the ChineseWomen\u2019s Calligraphy and Painting Society (zhongguo n\u00fczi shuhua hui<\/em> \u4e2d\u570b\u5973\u5b50\u66f8\u756b\u6703).[1]<\/a><\/p>\r\n

Art emphasizes truth, beauty, and goodness (zhenmeishan<\/em> \u771f\u7f8e\u5584). Art is able to strengthen people\u2019s mentality, develop a noble personality and personal intentions, fully express the author\u2019s unique state, and individual opinions. Artists ignore (mukong<\/em> \u76ee\u7a7a) the entity and view the world (liuhe<\/em> \u516d\u5408) spiritually (shenyou <\/em>\u795e\u904a), regard the nature (zaohua<\/em> \u9020\u5316) as the guide and the universe as the subject. Those true, beautiful, kind, peace, excellent, clean, grand, bright, and loving natures which are the most suitable for the female personalities only can be expressed by art. Every word and action of the person with artistic accomplishment is poetic and implicit, which is very different from those reckless and clumsy and stupid people. Women are equal to men in national laws, but our responsibilities in society are slightly different from those of men. If we promote women like my father did to develop their interests in exploring literature and art, which are close to women\u2019s nature, what women have accomplished is not only related to themselves but even undoubtedly affects the entire society.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

In the third special issue of the Chinese Women\u2019s Calligraphy and Painting Association, I mentioned several elements for the prospect of the Women\u2019s Calligraphy and Painting Society. Such as organizing research classes to study for further education; recruiting members widely for discovering talent; holding exhibitions in various places for providing channels of communication; gathering friends to visit places of interest when the weather is good to broaden minds and increase knowledge, and compiling and printing periodicals to inform\u00a0 people of recent research. These are the most closely related and crucial elements to the study of art.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

In the end, some people claimed that art is an aristocratic self-entertainment and a pastime for the people above the middle class (zhongdengjieji<\/em> \u4e2d\u7b49\u968e\u7d1a). This idea is wrong. Even national boundaries do not apply to art. How can it be class-oriented (jiejixing<\/em> \u968e\u7d1a\u6027)? We can compare this to eating rice. Rice is the same everywhere, but the way one eats it is different. Art is general and universal and the way one use and appreciate art is different. In my personal experience, everyone needs an interest in appreciating art, especially women. Because art is closely related to personal cultivation (xiuyang <\/em>\u4fee\u990a), which can change people\u2019s temperament, life, and thought. The value of the strong touch that art gives is eternal, which is unforgettable and memorable.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n
