This is my day-by-day chronicle from the first half of 1999 to the middle of 2005.You can consider it as my diary for these years. During this period, I was seconded from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (later renamed as the Ministry of Commerce) to work at the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\u8fd9\u662f\u6211\u81ea1999\u5e74\u4e0a\u534a\u5e74\u81f32005\u5e74\u4e2d\u7684\u9010\u65e5\u7eaa\u4e8b\uff0c\u59d1\u4e14\u7b97\u4f5c\u6211\u8fd9\u51e0\u5e74\u7684\u65e5\u8bb0\u5427\u3002\u5728\u8fd9\u6bb5\u65f6\u95f4\u91cc\uff0c\u6211\u7531\u5bf9\u5916\u8d38\u6613\u7ecf\u6d4e\u5408\u4f5c\u90e8(\u540e\u4e3a\u5546\u52a1\u90e8)\u5916\u6d3e\u5230\u4e2d\u56fd\u9a7b\u58a8\u5c14\u672c\u603b\u9886\u4e8b\u9986\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Diary emerged as a genre in China as since the Song Dynasty. It became increasingly popular during the Ming and Qing periods. The late Qing Dynasty saw a particularly abundant number of diaries that have survived to this day, such as Zeng Guofan’s(\u85e9)[1]<\/a>\u201cDiary of Zeng\u201d[2]<\/sup><\/a>, Weng Tongsu’s(\u7fc1\u540c\u7a23)[3]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cDiary of Weng\u201d [4]<\/sup><\/a>, Li Ciming’s\uff08\u674e\u6148\u94ed\uff09[5]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cDiary of Yuemantang\u201d[6]<\/sup><\/a>, Wang Kai Yun’s[7]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cDiary of Xiangqilou\u201d[8]<\/sup><\/a>, and Ye Changzhi’s[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u201cDiary of Yuandulu\u201d[10]<\/sup><\/a>. The diaries left behind by these political giants and academic luminaries have made significant contributions to the research of future generations! Most of what is preserved within them are invaluable historical materials and academic treasures.<\/p>\r\n

\u65e5\u8bb0\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u56fd\u4ece\u5b8b\u4ee5\u6765\u4ea7\u751f\u7684\u4e00\u79cd\u8457\u4f5c\u4f53\u88c1\u3002\u660e\u6e05\u65f6\u671f\u8fd0\u7528\u8005\u6e10\u591a\u3002\u665a\u6e05\u5c24\u751a\uff0c\u5b58\u4e16\u7684\u8457\u540d\u65e5\u8bb0\u6781\u5925\uff0c\u5982\u66fe\u56fd\u85e9\u300a\u66fe\u6587\u6b63\u516c\u65e5\u8bb0\u300b\u3002\u7fc1\u540c\u7a23\u300a\u7fc1\u6587\u606d\u516c\u65e5\u8bb0\u300b\u3001\u674e\u6148\u94ed\u300a\u8d8a\u7f26\u5802\u65e5\u8bb0\u300b\u3001\u738b\u95ff\u8fd0\u300a\u6e58\u7eee\u697c\u65e5\u8bb0\u300b\u3001\u53f6\u660c\u70bd\u300a\u7f18\u7763\u5e90\u65e5\u8bb0\u300b\u7b49\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u653f\u575b\u5de8\u5b50\u3001\u5b66\u754c\u6cf0\u6597\u6240\u7559\u4e0b\u6765\u7684\u65e5\u8bb0\uff0c\u4f55\u557b\u4e3a\u540e\u4e16\u67b6\u6784\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7\u5ea7\u5e7f\u53a6!\u91cc\u9762\u6240\u5e8b\u85cf\u7684\uff0c\u5927\u591a\u662f\u4e9b\u65e0\u4ef7\u53f2\u6599\u548c\u5b66\u672f\u7470\u5b9d\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

I do not have the habit of writing diaries. Being as ordinary as I am, I neither understand the intricacies of politics nor do I possess much academic fame. The diaries I write seem to hold little benefit for both others and myself[11]<\/a>. However, over the past few years stationed abroad, the requirements to plan and forecast our weekly work schedule forced me to keep writing diary each week. That\u2019s why I write this booklet.<\/p>\r\n

\u6b64\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u5e76\u65e0\u5199\u65e5\u8bb0\u7684\u4e60\u60ef\u3002\u6d45\u6d45\u5982\u4e88\uff0c\u65e2\u4e0d\u89e3\u653f\u575b\u67a2\u8981\u4e4b\u4e8b\uff0c\u5b66\u672f\u4e0a\u4ea6\u65e0\u751a\u5927\u540d\u6c14\uff0c\u81ea\u5fd6\u5199\u8fd9\u4e9b\u52b3\u4ec0\u5b50\uff0c\u4e0d\u8fc7\u662f\u7559\u4e0b\u4e00\u5806\u5783\u573e\uff0c\u4e8e\u4eba\u4e8e\u5df1\u5747\u65e0\u751a\u5927\u76ca\u5904\uff0c\u4e0d\u5982\u4e0d\u5199\u3002\u53ea\u56e0\u8fd9\u51e0\u5e74\u9a7b\u5916\uff0c\u8981\u6c42\u5bf9\u6bcf\u5468\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u5b89\u6392\u8981\u6709\u8ba1\u5212\u6027\u548c\u524d\u77bb\u6027\uff0c\u903c\u7740\u6211\u4eec\u4e0d\u5f97\u4e0d\u6bcf\u5468\u8fdb\u884c\u201c\u6392\u65e5\u7eaa\u4e8b\u201d\u3002\u8fd9\u5c31\u662f\u8fd9\u672c\u5c0f\u518c\u5b50\u300a\u58a8\u5c14\u672c\u7eaa\u4e8b\u300b\u4ea7\u751f\u7684\u7f18\u7531\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Upon careful examination, I find some interest in my diaries. Perhaps readers shed light on the customs and conditions of Australia, including its industries, agriculture, trade, education, and culture. They might also reveal the significant increase in economic cooperation and trade volume between China and Australia over the years. Additionally, they may provide insights into the frequent exchanges in education, tourism, and personnel between the two countries. Furthermore, my diaries include travelogues from scenic areas mainly in Victoria and Tasmania, where I have visited in Australia.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\u4ed4\u7ec6\u7ffb\u68c0\u4e00\u8fc7\uff0c\u5c1a\u89c9\u6709\u4e9b\u5174\u5473\u3002\u6216\u8bb8\u4ece\u4e2d\u53ef\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\u6fb3\u6d32\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u98ce\u571f\u4eba\u60c5\u53ca\u5176\u5de5\u519c\u4e1a\u3001\u8d38\u6613\u3001\u79d1\u6559\u3001\u6587\u5316\u7b49\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u72b6\u51b5\uff1b\u4ece\u4e2d\u4e5f\u53ef\u4e86\u89e3\u5230\u4e2d\u56fd\u548c\u6fb3\u5927\u5229\u4e9a\u4e24\u56fd\u4e4b\u95f4\uff0c\u5728\u8fd9\u4e9b\u5e74\u4e2d\u7684\u7ecf\u6d4e\u5408\u4f5c\u5173\u7cfb\u548c\u5927\u5e45\u5ea6\u63d0\u5347\u7684\u8d38\u6613\u91cf\uff1b\u8fd8\u53ef\u4e86\u89e3\u4e24\u56fd\u4e4b\u95f4\u7559\u5b66\u3001\u65c5\u6e38\u548c\u4eba\u5458\u5f80\u6765\u9891\u7e41\u7684\u72b6\u51b5\uff1b\u5c1a\u53ef\u8bfb\u5230\u7b14\u8005\u5728\u6fb3\u5927\u5229\u4e9a\uff0c\u4e3b\u8981\u662f\u7ef4\u5dde\u3001\u5854\u5dde\uff0c\u8db3\u8ff9\u6240\u81f3\u65f6\u6240\u5199\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u98ce\u666f\u533a\u6e38\u8bb0\u3002\u7b49\u7b49\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

In addition, before going abroad, one of China’s most renowned publishing houses, the Zhonghua Book Company[12]<\/sup><\/a>, published my academic monograph \u201cA Comprehensive Study of Bibliographers\u201d in June 1999, consisting of three volumes and 1.4 million characters. This work is the result of twenty years of hard work and honest labor. Since its publication, I have received dozens of letters from readers and reviews published in newspapers such as the People’s Daily[13]<\/sup><\/a>, Guangming Daily[14]<\/sup><\/a>, and Wen Hui Bao[15]<\/sup><\/a>. I have also compiled summaries of these letters and reviews for future reference by scholars and researchers in classical bibliography and bibliographers. Last September and October, I went back to China for a meeting and submitted the printed manuscript of \u201cThe Melbourne Chronicle\u201d to the Commercial Press. After General Manager Yang Deyan reviewed it, he was pleased to recommend it for publication by the press immediately. The editorial department also provided some valuable suggestions for revisions. Furthermore, during the writing process of this manuscript, our colleagues in the office, including Secretary Zhang Zheng, Secretary Zhang Fan, Secretary Zhang Yanhua, and Secretary Jiang Lili, have all contributed significantly. In particular, Comrades Zhang Yanhua and Jiang Lili transcribed the entire manuscript. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all these enthusiastic supporters.\r\n

\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u6211\u5728\u51fa\u56fd\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u6700\u8457\u540d\u7684\u51fa\u7248\u793e\u4e4b\u4e00\u2014\u2014\u4e2d\u534e\u4e66\u5c40[1]<\/a>\uff0c\u4e8e1999\u5e746\u6708\u51fa\u7248\u53d1\u884c\u4e86\u6211\u7684\u5b66\u672f\u4e13\u8457\u300a\u6587\u732e\u5bb6\u901a\u8003\u300b\u4e0a\u3001\u4e2d\u3001\u4e0b\u4e09\u5de8\u518c\uff0c\u767e\u56db\u5341\u4e07\u5b57\u3002\u8fd9\u662f\u79ef\u6211\u4e8c\u5341\u5e74\u5fc3\u8840\u548c\u8bda\u5b9e\u52b3\u52a8\u7684\u7ed3\u6676\u3002\u6893\u884c\u4ee5\u6765\uff0c\u6211\u9646\u7eed\u6536\u5230\u6570\u5341\u4f4d\u8bfb\u8005\u6765\u4fe1\uff0c\u8bfb\u5230\u300a\u4eba\u6c11\u65e5\u62a5\u300b\u3001\u300a\u5149\u660e\u65e5\u62a5\u300b\u3001\u300a\u6587\u6c47\u62a5\u300b\u7b49\u53d1\u8868\u7684\u4e66\u8bc4\u3002\u6211\u4ea6\u5c06\u8fd9\u4e9b\u6765\u4fe1\u548c\u4e66\u8bc4\u6458\u8981\u6392\u65e5\u5f55\u5165\uff0c\u4ee5\u5907\u65e5\u540e\u7814\u7a76\u53e4\u6587\u732e\u5b66\u3001\u6587\u732e\u5b66\u5bb6\u8005\u53c2\u8003\u3002\u53bb\u5e74\u4e5d\u3001\u5341\u6708,\u6211\u56de\u56fd\u5f00\u4f1a,\u5c06\u300a\u58a8\u5c14\u672c\u7eaa\u4e8b\u300b\u6253\u5370\u7a3f\u9001\u5546\u52a1\u5370\u4e66\u9986\u3002\u6768\u5fb7\u708e\u603b\u7ecf\u7406\u9605\u540e,\u5373\u4e50\u4e3a\u63a8\u8350\u5728\u8be5\u9986\u51fa\u7248\u53d1\u884c\u3002\u7f16\u8f91\u90e8\u5e76\u63d0\u51fa\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u5b9d\u8d35\u7684\u4fee\u6539\u610f\u89c1\u3002\u53c8,\u6211\u5e73\u65e5\u5728\u64b0\u5199\u6b64\u7a3f\u65f6\u672c\u5ba4\u4eba\u5458\u4e00\u79d8\u5f20\u94ee\u3001\u4e8c\u79d8\u5f20\u5e06\u3001\u4e8c\u79d8\u5f20\u5f66\u534e\u3001\u4e8c\u79d8\u848b\u8389\u8389\u8bf8\u540c\u5fd7\u4e5f\u5148\u540e\u51fa\u4e86\u4e0d\u5c11\u529b\u3002\u7279\u522b\u662f\u5f20\u5f66\u534e\u3001\u848b\u8389\u8389\u540c\u5fd7\u5f55\u4eba\u4e86\u5168\u90e8\u4e66\u7a3f\u3002\u5728\u6b64,\u6211\u4e00\u5e76\u5411\u8fd9\u4e9b\u70ed\u60c5\u652f\u6301\u8005\u81f4\u4ee5\u8c22\u5ff1\u3002\r\n

In the early morning, we departed from the consulate. Our car drove through the Melbourne city center, crossed the West Gate Bridge, and headed south along the M1 highway through the western wilderness of Phillip Bay. After passing Geelong, we continued southward. After about an hour and a half of driving, we arrived at Queenscliff, located at the tip of the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\u6e05\u6668,\u4ece\u9886\u9986\u51fa\u53d1,\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u6c7d\u8f66\u7a7f\u8fc7\u58a8\u5c14\u672c\u57ce\u533a,\u8de8\u8fc7\u897f\u95e8\u6865,\u6cbf\u7740\u83f2\u5229\u666e\u6d77\u6e7e\u897f\u90e8\u539f\u91ce\u4e0a\u7684 M1\u9ad8\u901f\u516c\u8def\u5411\u5357\u884c\u9a76;\u7ecf\u8fc7\u57fa\u9686\u57ce\u540e,\u53c8\u7ee7\u7eed\u5f80\u5357;\u5927\u7ea6\u8d70\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u534a\u5c0f\u65f6,\u6765\u5230\u67cf\u4e50\u6da6\u534a\u5c9b(Bellarine Peninsula)\u7684\u5c9b\u5c16\u6606\u58eb\u514b\u5229\u592b(Oueenscliff)\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

This is the western tip of the land at the entrance of Phillip Bay, facing the eastern tip of Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula. They face each other across the sea. Using a vivid metaphor, east peninsula tip and west peninsula tip are like the large claws of a crab, guarding the entrance of Phillip Bay to the South Pacific. Alternatively, the space between the two peninsula tips forms a bottleneck, connecting Phillip Bay to the South Pacific. This bottleneck turns the bay into a large inland sea, resembling a mysterious treasure bottle and the great city of Melbourne is scattered around this. The unique natural conditions[16<\/sup><\/a> have transformed Melbourne into a bustling and enchanting beautiful bay city.\r\n

These branches are adorned with deep green needle-shaped leaves, resembling countless palms reaching towards the sky and welcoming guests. This tree along with the carpet of yellow flowers, appears even more magical. At the entrance of the museum, there are two large iron anchors. We struggled to lift the heavy iron chains for a photo in front of the anchors. In the middle of the yellow flower lawn, there is a statue of a green iron man. Perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea was a tall and large white lighthouse. It was said to be the location of an Australian military academy, so we couldn\u2019t enter. At 3 o\u2019clock in the afternoon, we arrived at the pier on the tip of the island. Here, a ferry departs every hour, heading to the Portsea Pier on the opposite tip of the island. It is a giant white sea liner with four decks high. The lower deck of the sea liner is a garage that can accommodate around 70 cars, both passenger and cargo. The second and third decks are cabins for passengers, while the fourth deck is available for passengers to stroll freely and enjoy the scenery of the strait. As newcomers, naturally, we climbed to the top deck to gaze out over the strait and bask in the sea breeze blowing in from the South Pacific. We took pictures with the strait from different angles, capturing the most magical and magnificent views of the strait!<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

We went to Loy Yang in Morwell town to visit the La Trobe Village power station. Loy Yang is pronounced similarly to Luoyang in China. It is said that 200 years ago, this area was a swamp with eels everywhere. The indigenous language referred to eels as Loy Yang. This power station is adjacent to an open-pit brown coal field with a coal reserve of 160 billion tons, of which 35 billion tons are on the surface. The open-pit coal seam is 50-150 meters thick, and the coal is transported to the adjacent furnaces via conveyor belts using excavators, resulting in low electricity generation costs for this power station.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

Chinese-made clothing products are ubiquitous. Knit underwear, men’s and women’s shirts, trousers, and various types of clothing are sold in all malls. Compared to those from Australia, Europe, America, and Southeast Asia, Chinese products account for about half of the offerings, with some malls carrying even more, reaching around 70%. There are also many ties and men\u2019s and women\u2019s evening dresses(\u665a\u793c\u670d)[18]<\/sup><\/a> produced in China. Infant and toddler cotton clothing is particularly abundant. Salespeople at David Jones supermarket told us that the quality, styles, and colors of Chinese infant and toddler clothing are good, and the prices are relatively cheaper, making them popular in Australia. Some stores occasionally have suits made in China, but it’s rare to find higher-end options.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

Its exports are mainly wool, aluminum, machinery products, transportation equipment, dairy products and so on. Export partners are: Japan (23.5%), Hong Kong (10.4%), the United States (9.5%), Chinese Taipei (8.8%), South Korea (7.6%). Import partners are: the United States (16.4%), New Zealand (9.5%), the United Kingdom (6.1%), China (5.7%), Germany (4.2%). Trade in services was 194 million Australian dollars in exports and 198 million in imports. Tasmania’s trade with Taiwan totaled 214 million and with Hong Kong 252 million.<\/td>\r\n\r\n

During the conversation, we learned that Mr. He is a native of Shanghai, graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, a disciple of the famous painter Mr. Liu Haisu.<\/p>\r\n

It happen to be the harvest time, and the farmers are driving large and specialized harvesters to take the hops off the shelves and send them to the workshop to be made into finished products after drying. These products are sold to breweries all over the world. The company also has a joint venture, Tianma Hops, in Jiuquan, Gansu Province, China.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

He and his wife, Xie Jiqing, both from Shanghai, came to Tasmania to specialize in the purchase and export of abalone and lobster. He warmly invited us to visit his company and led us[26]<\/a> to go to the east coast.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

There were two large warehouses, which was built with two large pools, one stocked with lobsters and the other with abalones, which were all fresh sent or purchased by fishermen from near and far. The seawater in the pool is pumped up from the sea. The company has several local employees. The leader staff have been working in the company for many years, and has a close relationship with Qiu,\u00a0 a lot of business work are assured to let him do. In the evening, Qiu\u2019s wife cooked Shanghai-style food for us, absolutely with lobster and abalone.<\/p>\r\n

A few days ago, John McWilliams, a senior lecturer at Deakin University, told me that his students believe doing business with China requires understanding Chinese culture, which they think mainly involves gift-giving and building relationships. I was quite surprised. He invited me to give a lecture on Chinese culture at his university. Today, I went to Deakin University in Geelong to lecture about more than ten company managers studying for MBA. My topic was \u201cWhat is Chinese Culture\u201d. \u00a0\u201cCulture\u201d is a very fashionable word in today\u2019s world. Everything is labeled as \u201cculture\u201d \u2013 wine culture, business culture, sports culture, stamp-collecting culture, matchbox culture, cigarette box culture, this culture, that culture. Recently, a teacher from a university in Melbourne told me that a student had heard from a friend that only learning Chinese language is not enough for doing business in China; one must also understand Chinese culture. And that is, gift-giving. So, gift-giving is Chinese culture, wearing long pigtail[28]<\/a> is Chinese culture, and foot-binding [29]<\/a> is also Chinese culture.\r\n

Many Western friends know very little about China and don\u2019t really understand what Chinese culture is. In fact, Chinese culture is a system that has been developing for five thousand years. It is boundless, extensive and profound.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\u4e0d\u5c11\u6d0b\u4eba\u670b\u53cb\u5bf9\u4e2d\u56fd\u4e86\u89e3\u751a\u5c11\uff0c\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u5230\u5e95\u4ec0\u4e48\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u3002\u5b9e\u9645\u4e0a\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5ef6\u7ef5\u4e86\u4e94\u5343\u5e74\u7684\u6587\u5316\u4f53\u7cfb\u3002\u5b83\u6d69\u701a\u65e0\u9645\uff0c\u9ad8\u6df1\u83ab\u6d4b\uff0c\u535a\u5927\u7cbe\u6df1\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

To discuss Chinese culture, we must mention about its five thousand years of history. From the mythical era, to the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, to the Qin and Han dynasties, to the Three Kingdoms[30]<\/a>, Jin, and the Southern and Northern dynasties, to the Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties, to the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and finally to modern times, the history of Chinese civilization has never been interrupted. Unlike ancient Babylon, Greece, and India, China\u2019s culture is a continuous and evolving system that has lasted five thousand years and will continue to develop indefinitely. The historical records documenting China\u2019s history are vast and numerous; just the official histories recorded by successive dynasties amount to 25 volumes, forming a city of books. No one dares to claim they have fully understood the five thousand years of Chinese history. Even studying the history of a single dynasty or a specific topic is a lifelong pursuit. Joseph Needham(\u674e\u7ea6\u745f)\u2019s[31]<\/a> Science and Civilization in China[32]<\/strong><\/a><\/em> and John K. Fairbank(\u8d39\u6b63\u6e05)\u2019s[33]<\/a> A General History of<\/em> the Qing Dynasty <\/em>are all a series of ten to twenty volumes. Zhang Kaiyuan[34]<\/a>\u2019s History of the 1911 Revolution<\/em>(Xinhai Geming \u8f9b\u4ea5\u9769\u547d)[35]<\/a> from Central China Normal University in Wuhan is also a series of about ten volumes, and the<\/em> Complete Works of Sun Yat-sen<\/em>[36]<\/a> even comprises over forty large volumes.\r\n

\u8981\u8bb2\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\uff0c\u5c31\u8981\u8bb2\u4ed6\u7684\u4e94\u5343\u5e74\u5386\u53f2\u3002\u4ece\u4f20\u8bf4\u65f6\u4ee3\uff0c\u5230\u590f\u5546\u5468\uff0c\u5230\u79e6\u6c49\uff0c\u5230\u9b4f\u664b\u5357\u5317\u671d\uff0c\u5230\u968b\u5510\u4e94\u4ee3\uff0c\u5230\u4e24\u5b8b\u5143\u660e\u6e05\uff0c\u5230\u8fd1\u73b0\u4ee3\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u6587\u660e\u53d1\u5c55\u53f2\u4ece\u6765\u5c31\u6ca1\u6709\u4e2d\u65ad\u8fc7\uff0c\u4e0d\u50cf\u53e4\u5df4\u6bd4\u4f26\u3001\u5e0c\u814a\u3001\u5370\u5ea6\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u6587\u5316\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5ef6\u7eed\u4e86\u4e94\u5343\u5e74\uff0c\u8fd8\u8981\u53d1\u5c55\u5230\u6c38\u8fdc\u7684\u5b8c\u6574\u6587\u5316\u4f53\u7cfb\u3002\u8bb0\u8f7d\u4e2d\u56fd\u5386\u53f2\u7684\u53f2\u4e66\u6d69\u5982\u70df\u6d77\uff0c\u4ec5\u5386\u4ee3\u7687\u671d\u6240\u4fee\u7684\u6b63\u53f2\u5c31\u670925\u90e8\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u5ea7\u4e66\u57ce\u3002\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u6562\u8bf4\uff0c\u5df2\u7ecf\u628a\u4e2d\u56fd\u4e94\u5343\u5e74\u5386\u53f2\u7814\u7a76\u900f\u4e86\u3002\u5c31\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u671d\u4ee3\u53f2\u3001\u4e00\u4e2a\u4e13\u9898\u53f2\uff0c\u4e00\u8f88\u5b50\u4e5f\u96be\u4ee5\u7814\u7a76\u900f\u3002\u82f1\u56fd\u4eba\u674e\u7ea6\u745f\u7684\u300a\u4e2d\u56fd\u79d1\u6280\u53f2\u300b\uff0c\u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba\u8d39\u6b63\u6e05\u7684\u300a\u6e05\u4ee3\u901a\u53f2\u300b\uff0c\u90fd\u662f\u4e00\u5957\u5341\u51e0\u672c\u3001\u4e8c\u5341\u51e0\u672c\uff0c\u6b66\u6c49\u534e\u4e2d\u5e08\u5927\u7ae0\u5f00\u6c85\u7684\u300a\u8f9b\u4ea5\u9769\u547d\u53f2\u300b\u4e5f\u662f\u5341\u6765\u518c\uff0c\u300a\u5b59\u4e2d\u5c71\u5168\u96c6\u300b\u4e00\u5957\u5c31\u662f\u56db\u5341\u591a\u5de8\u518c\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

The history of Chinese civilization is like a gobbledegook[37]<\/a> that no one can fully understand. It cannot be summarized in a few words! This is Chinese culture, the great Chinese culture!<\/p>\r\n

\u4e00\u90e8\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u660e\u53d1\u5c55\u53f2\u5c31\u50cf\u4e00\u90e8\u5929\u4e66\uff0c\u662f\u4efb\u4f55\u4eba\u4e5f\u96be\u4ee5\u7814\u7a76\u900f\u7684\uff0c\u4e09\u8a00\u4e24\u8bed\u5c82\u80fd\u8bf4\u5f97\u6e05\u695a\uff01\u8fd9\u5c31\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\uff0c\u4f1f\u5927\u7684\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\uff01<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

Those who don\u2019t understand Chinese culture might misunderstand that long pigtail, foot-binding, and gift-giving are Chinese culture. This view takes a part for the whole and doesn\u2019t capture the true essence of Chinese culture. Just as an person has both strengths and weaknesses, the culture of a country or nation comprises both its essence and its dross. Old practices like wearing long pigtail and foot-binding are misconceptions about Chinese culture and have already been discarded for a very long time. However, gift-giving is a genuine practice among the Chinese people. China is a nation of etiquette, emphasizing ethics, morality, and deep emotional connections. Chinese people are known for their humanity and humanitarianism. Li Shang Wang Lai(\u793c\u5c1a\u5f80\u6765)[38]<\/a>, that is, people use gift-giving to express feelings and build friendships, is very understandable and acceptable. This custom will likely continue to exist widely in the future. Similar customs also exist in Western countries, though perhaps not as prominently as in China. Gift-giving is merely a folk custom and cannot be equated with the Chinese culture.<\/span>\r\n

\u4e0d\u4e86\u89e3\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u7684\u4eba,\u8bf4\u957f\u8fab\u5b50\u3001\u88f9\u5c0f\u811a,\u9001\u793c\u5c31\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316,\u5b9e\u5728\u662f\u4ee5\u504f\u6982\u5168,\u6070\u6070\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e0d\u80fd\u4ee3\u8868\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u6587\u5316\u3002\u5982\u540c\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u6709\u4f18\u70b9\u4e5f\u6709\u7f3a\u70b9\u4e00\u6837,\u4e00\u4e2a\u56fd\u5bb6\u3001\u4e00\u4e2a\u6c11\u65cf\u7684\u6587\u5316,\u6709\u7cbe\u534e\u4e5f\u6709\u7cdf\u7c95\u3002\u7559\u957f\u8fab\u5b50\u3001\u88f9\u5c0f\u811a\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u7684\u8bef\u533a,\u5df2\u7ecf\u90fd\u88ab\u6254\u8fdb\u4e86\u5783\u573e\u6876\u3002\u9001\u793c\u662f\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u6c11\u95f4\u786e\u5b9e\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u4e00\u79cd\u4e60\u4fd7\u3002\u4e2d\u56fd\u662f\u793c\u4eea\u4e4b\u90a6,\u5f88\u8bb2\u7a76\u4f26\u7406\u9053\u5fb7,\u5f88\u91cd\u611f\u60c5\u3002\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u662f\u6700\u8bb2\u4eba\u6027\u3001\u4eba\u9053\u4e3b\u4e49\u7684\u3002\u793c\u5c1a\u5f80\u6765,\u901a\u8fc7\u4e92\u8d60\u793c\u54c1\u6765\u4f20\u9012\u611f\u60c5,\u5efa\u7acb\u53cb\u8c0a,\u8fd9\u662f\u65e0\u53ef\u539a\u975e\u7684\u3002\u4eca\u540e\u8fd8\u4f1a\u666e\u904d\u5b58\u5728\u4e0b\u53bb\u3002\u5728\u897f\u65b9\u56fd\u5bb6\u4e5f\u6709\u8fd9\u79cd\u4e60\u4fd7,\u53ea\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u8fd9\u79cd\u4e60\u4fd7\u66f4\u6d53\u4e00\u4e9b\u3002\u9001\u793c\u53ea\u662f\u4e00\u79cd\u6c11\u95f4\u4e60\u4fd7,\u4e0d\u80fd\u8bf4\u5b83\u5c31\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

The problem arises in economic activities when some people ignore laws and regulations, accepting gifts to facilitate matters, and even demanding bribes. These actions are illegal, and in some cases, criminal, and must be combated and punished. Such issues also exist in Western countries, sometimes to a shocking extent. It is incorrect to label such behavior as Chinese culture; it is simply trash that needs to be discarded.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

Chinese culture has continuously developed over thousands of years, which is a brilliant and significant part of humanity\u2019s valuable spiritual heritage. However, due to the deep influence of the feudalism, a tendency toward self-isolation, and Chinese person with a very limited outlook at that time, along with China\u2019s rulers historically neglected the development of science, technology, and the commodity economy, leading to Chinese economic, cultural, and technological backwardness compared to the West. After the Industrial Revolution, Western countries experienced rapid advancements, especially in the modern era, entering the era of electronics and automation. Even China\u2019s Four Great Inventions[39]<\/a> have been surpassed by the West, and British porcelain products have surpassed those of China.<\/span>\r\n

\u51e0\u5343\u5e74\u5ef6\u7eed\u4e0d\u65ad\u53d1\u5c55\u8d77\u6765\u7684\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u707f\u70c2\u8f89\u714c,\u662f\u5168\u4eba\u7c7b\u5b9d\u8d35\u7cbe\u795e\u8d22\u5bcc\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u91cd\u8981\u7ec4\u6210\u90e8\u5206\u3002\u56e0\u4e3a\u5c01\u5efa\u5236\u5ea6\u5f71\u54cd\u592a\u957f\uff0c\u56fa\u6b65\u81ea\u5c01,\u4e95\u5e95\u4e4b\u86d9,\u7edf\u6cbb\u8005\u957f\u671f\u4e0d\u91cd\u89c6\u79d1\u5b66\u6280\u672f\u7684\u53d1\u5c55,\u4e0d\u91cd\u89c6\u5546\u54c1\u7ecf\u6d4e\u7684\u53d1\u5c55,\u4f7f\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u7ecf\u6d4e\u3001\u6587\u5316\u3001\u79d1\u6280\u4e8b\u4e1a\u957f\u671f\u843d\u540e\u4e8e\u897f\u65b9\u3002\u897f\u65b9\u56fd\u5bb6\u7ecf\u8fc7\u5de5\u4e1a\u9769\u547d,\u5c24\u5176\u5230\u4eca\u5929,\u79d1\u5b66\u6280\u672f\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u7a81\u98de\u731b\u8fdb,\u5df2\u7ecf\u8fdb\u5165\u7535\u5b50\u65f6\u4ee3\u3001\u81ea\u52a8\u5316\u65f6\u4ee3\u3002\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u56db\u5927\u53d1\u660e,\u897f\u65b9\u90fd\u8d85\u8fc7\u4e86\u4e2d\u56fd,\u82f1\u56fd\u7684\u74f7\u5668\u4ea7\u54c1\u4e5f\u8d85\u8fc7\u4e86\u4e2d\u56fd\u3002<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n

In modern times, Chinese patriots and people with lofty ideals started revolutions, striving for over a century to end feudal society, overthrow Chiang Kai-shek\u2019s[40]<\/a> rule, and establish the new China. Particularly over the past 20 years of reform and opening up, China has made significant economic progress. We believe that with tireless effort, the Chinese culture, which once led the world and then fell behind, will flourish again, and China will be rejuvenated. The Chinese people are diligent, honest, intelligent, gentle, and friendly. Mr. Liu Zhaokuan, a Chinese Australian, lent me a book titled Calm in the Storm<\/em> by Chiang Ching-kuo(\u848b\u7ecf\u56fd), printed in February 1967 by the \u201cMinistry of National Defense \u201d[41]<\/a>practice seminar in Taiwan. This book compiles fifteen articles by Chiang Ching-kuo. His piece In Times of Crisis<\/em>(pages 117-280) is actually a diary written by Chiang Ching-kuo in 1949, recording the experiences of Chiang Kai-shek and his son, as well as the history of Nationalist army\u2019s defeat, on a month-by-month, day-by-day basis. It\u2019s well worth reading. Mr. Liu comes from a family of Nationalist soldiers and rose to the rank of colonel. His wife, Xie Mingzhu, is an ethnic Chinese from East Timor. They have lived in Melbourne for many years and have many relatives there. Mr. Liu mentioned that the person who guarded General Zhang Xueliang in Taiwan was Zhao Longwen, a native of Fenghua. Zhao collected a painting by Shi Kefa[42]<\/a> from the Ming dynasty, which included Ti Ba\uff08\u9898\u8dcbpreface and postscript\uff09[43]<\/a> from people during the period of Qing Dynasty\u2019s Emperor Daoguang. Mr. Zhao was a little bit arty[44]<\/a>, so he also added a postscript on the painting. While Shi Kefa\u2019s calligraphy is well known, his paintings are rare, making this piece a remarkable treasure. Mr. Liu then showed me a photograph of this painting.<\/p>\r\n

Ascending the steps, I found a large stage where concerts are held here every day, allowing visitors to sit and enjoy the performances. In front of one building, there is a realistic pink horse sculpture that attracts a lot of attention. Inside, there are art galleries, conference halls, bookstores, and etc..<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

One bridge features a semi-circular arch resembling a rainbow stretching across the river, creating a beautiful picture with the river, bridges, skyscrapers, blue sky, and white clouds.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

After about half an hour, two small planes, each with a capacity of only seven passengers, took off. Through the windows, we could sometimes clearly see the densely grid-like cityscape below, sometimes trace the plane\u2019s path along the coastline, and sometimes enjoy the golden sunlight through the gaps in the clouds, making the ground looks verdant,colorful and vibrant. The plane flew along Victoria\u2019s west coast, crossing the Twelve Apostles and then descending after about 200 kilometers further west. The beautiful scene of Portland Bay came into clear view from the window. Soon, the plane landed at Portland Airport.<\/td>\r\n\r\n

The Consulate General is in Toorak. Toorak is not only famous in Melbourne but is one of only a few wealthy neighborhoods in Australia. It is lined with mansions, each costing millions or tens of millions of Australian dollars. The Consulate is also one of those mansions, purchased for over 3 million Australian dollars. Rumor has it that the building, formerly known as the Australian Naval Club[53]<\/a>, is more than 100 years old and is a protected historical artifact. In just a few short years, it has appreciated quite a bit in value. The Consulate is a two-story pink and yellow Western-style house, located in the back half of the courtyard, the front half is a large piece of green grass and a variety of flowers and trees, a quiet and elegant environment. The Consulate’s courtyard can accommodate eight or nine hundred people, and the annual National Day and Chinese New Year receptions are held here. Local Chinese are proud to participate in the activities of the Consulate. The Chinese Consulate General is proudly located in Toorak. Even foreigners are surprised when they see our business card with the address of Toorak printed on it. We are certainly proud.<\/p>\r\n
