As a result, many aldermen as well as merchants approached the mayor, the head of the city council, and earnestly requested\u00a0him to convey\u00a0their petition to the British court.\u00a0They pleaded with him for a ceasefire to prevent further casualties, regardless of what means would be resorted to. However, purporting\u00a0to be a \u201cpatriot\u201d, the mayor\u00a0not only rejected their plea but also angrily tore the petition into pieces,\u00a0and was infuriated with the petitioners from start to finish.
